Bosjes bouwkranen draaien hun rondjes
boven de betonnen muur in wording. Als we er haaks op
varen wordt het profiel duidelijker: tientallen meters
breed beton, een wig waar later het ontbrekende deel
rotsvast in zal vallen.

Plan to tame Yangtze floods BBC News, 12-10-2001
China and the UN are preparing an ambitious plan to prevent any repetition of the disastrous 1998 floods on the Yangtze river. The work, which will cost $10m (£7m), will restore lost lakes, and reduce deforestation and erosion. It is designed to save lives and livelihoods, to slow damage to the environment and to safeguard wild species. The pilot phase is expected to start in two months' time. The scheme has been developed by Chinese researchers and colleagues from the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep).
China builds second biggest dam BBC News, 1-7-2001
China starts work on Sunday on a new hydroelectric dam project which official media say will be the second largest in Asia. As in the case of the Three Gorges dam concerns have been raised about its environmental impact The dam, in China's south-western Guangxi region, will cost around $3.2bn and will take eight years to complete. An estimated 75,000 people will be moved to make way for the project, which is second in size only to the giant Three Gorges dam on the Yangtze River. It will be an important source of power for China, but as in the case of the Three Gorges dam - the world's largest - concerns have been raised about its environmental impact.
Int'l Procurement for Three Gorges Left-Bank Power Station Concluded
People's Daily, 9-8-2001
With the last two contracts signed Wednesday for the procurement of two big computer-control systems for the Left-Bank Power Station at the Three Gorges, international tendering for the first-phase construction of the world's largest hydropower project has concluded.
Commissioned by the China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Development Corporation (CTGPC), the Three Gorges International Tendering Co. has organized a series of biddings for the procurement since 1997, with the total purchasing value amounting to one billion U.S. dollars.
At today's signing ceremony, ABB Automation from Sweden and AlSTOM Switzerland clenched contracts with CTGPC for providing the project with computer supervision and control systems for the cascade dispatch center and left-bank power station, respectively.

Chinese Premier on Migration and Environment Protection in Area of Three Gorges Project
People's Daily, 19-7-2001
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji stressed the migration drive and moving-out of enterprises in the Three Gorges Project, China's largest water conservation project on the Yangtze River, must be sped up to ensure the completion of the project for water-storage in less than two years.
Addressing the work conference on Three Gorges migration held from July 16-18 in Yichang, Hubei Province, the premier emphasized that construction quality is the essential part of the Three Gorges Project.
Zhu, also head of Three Gorges Project Construction Committee (TGPCC), urged that it is a must to focus on environmental protection, prevention of geologic hazards and ecological construction in the dam area and do a good job in the migration and resettlement of local people.

Yangtze Shipping to Stop April-June
People's Daily, 5-6-2001
The State has pledged to take measures to guarantee smooth navigation during the period when the Yangtze River will be closed due to the ongoing Three Gorges project, in November next year.
"We will strengthen our management of the temporary lock to ensure that transportation is accommodated during the closure,'' said Wang Jiazhu, deputy general manager of the China Yangtze Three Gorges Project Development Corp.
According to Wang, the lock, which will be the only navigation access on the Yangtze River during the period, which is designed to channel fleets with a total dead weight of 9-11 million tons a year, is currently handling transportation of 7-9 million tons.

The Silting Problem of Three Gorges Reservoir Can Hopefully Be Solved
People's Daily, 5-6-2001
A recent study conducted by Chinese researchers shows that the silting problem in power generation and navigation in the reservoir region can hopefully be resolved.
According to news reports, the average annual bed-load caliber in Yichang section of the Three Gorges reservoir reaches 530 million tons, failing to properly solve such a problem will not only affect the normal display of the reservoir's flood-control and power-generation efficiency and shorten the service life of the reservoir, but can also influence the unimpeded flow of the major Yangtze waterways.
