Passenger Ship Hits Rocks on Upper Reaches of Yangtze River

A Chinese passenger ship sailed into rock-studded waters Monday night on the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, but no deaths or injuries were reported among the 204 passengers and 26 crew members. According to the Ministry of Communications, the Wanzhou Ship, owned by the Chongqing Wanzhou Shipping Company, sailed into a rocky area by mistake on the upper waters of the Three Gorges at 9:20 p.m. Monday, while en route from Yichang to Wanzhou.
China Steps Up Safety Supervision on Yangtze

China Friday formed an organization to improve supervision of shipping safety on the mighty Yangtze River. With the approval of the Chinese Ministry of Communications, the newly-founded Yangtze River Maritime Affairs Bureau will oversee safety on the Yangtze by preventing pollution caused by ships, conducting checkups of vessels, and enforcing rules and regulations.
